About our Coach Criteria and Designations

VRC is proud of the Coaches that continue to volunteer their time and experience each hockey season.  The success of the hockey season for a player and a team is reliant on a dedicated and enthusiastic coaching staff.

All Coaches at VRC must meet strict requirements as set out by Hockey Canada, BC Hockey and VRC.   There are three Coach designations at VRCMHA;

Head Coach - The Head Coach of a VRC Team is responsible for all on-ice team operations.  For all Tier I and Tier II teams from Peewee - Midget it is the goal that all Head Coaches have no children or other relatives on the team they are responsible for.   The position of Head Coach requires countless hours of volunteering, both on the ice and in preparation.

Assistant Coach - Assistant Coaches at VRC are directly involved with the instruction and coaching of the players, and in implementing practice and year plans as established by the Head Coach.  Where feasible, Assistant Coaches on Tier I teams have no children or other relatives on the team they are involved with.

Coach Assistant - A Coach Assistant at VRC is often a parent volunteer who provides assistance on the ice during practices, and as needed on the bench during games.   A Coach Assistant provides administrative support to the Head and Assistant Coaches and will often be seen preparing for a specific drill during a practice (moving pucks), acting as a support player (passing pucks during a drill) or opening a gate on the bench during a game.  Coach Assistants are Hockey Canada certified Coaches and follow the direction of the Head Coach and Assistant Coaches.

In 2010/11, the appointment of Coaching Staffs are designed to increase communication between teams with a division.  A Head Coach on the Tier II team may be involved with the Tier I team in a support capacity.  A Coach mentorship program is also being implemented in 2010/11.
